Scripture Verse

Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows
Readings: 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31a/Psalm 100/John 19:25-27
Today the Church invites us to stand with Mary beneath the Cross and contemplate the depth of her sorrow. Mary is not standing at a distance from the suffering of her Son. She is there, close enough to see His wounds, hear His words, and experience the pain of a mother watching her innocent Son suffer. Yet, even in her sorrow, Mary remains faithful. The words of Jesus from the Cross are among the most tender words in the Gospel: “Woman, behold, your son.” And to the beloved disciple: “Behold, your mother.” Jesus gives Mary to the disciple, and through him, He gives Mary to the whole Church. At the moment of His greatest suffering, Jesus creates a relationship of spiritual motherhood. This is beautifully connected with Saint Paul's teaching in the first reading: “You are Christ’s Body, and individually parts of it.” As members of Christ's Body, we are not alone. We belong to one another. And Jesus gives us Mary as Mother of this family of faith. She stands with us in our joys, but especially in our sorrows. Mary understands suffering. She knows what it means to lose, to wait, to endure, and to trust God when the path is painful and unclear. Therefore, when we are suffering, we can turn to her with confidence. When a family is struggling, when someone is grieving, when a person feels abandoned, when faith is being tested, Mary can say to us: “Do not be afraid. I am here with you.” But Jesus also says to each of us: “Behold, your mother.” The question is whether we will take Mary into our home, as the beloved disciple did. To take Mary into our home means to welcome her faith, her humility, her courage, and her trust in God. It means allowing her to lead us always toward Jesus. Our Lady of Sorrows teaches us that Christian discipleship does not mean the absence of suffering. It means remaining faithful to Christ even beneath the Cross. And Psalm 100 reminds us that despite our trials, “We are his people: the sheep of his flock.” The God who accompanies Mary through sorrow also accompanies us. Today, therefore, let us hear Christ's words personally: “Behold, your mother.” Let us receive Mary as our Mother, especially in moments of sorrow. And like the beloved disciple, let us take her into our homes, our families, our hearts, and our lives. Our Lady of Sorrows, Mother of Mercy, pray for us and lead us always to your Son. Amen.
