Wisdom, Psalm, Luke 6,82,17:1-11,,11-19Wisdom, Psalm, Luke 6,82,17 :1-11,,11-19
The Book of Wisdom, written during a time of persecution, addresses today’s message to those in authority: “Hear, O kings, and understand… Because authority was given you by the Lord and sovereignty by the Most High.” The sacred author reminds rulers that all power and responsibility come from God, who will scrutinize how it is used. This was a bold claim—especially to pagan kings—declaring that no authority exists apart from God’s will.
This divine truth still challenges our world today. Too often, leaders act as if they are accountable to no one. Power, instead of being a gift to serve, becomes a weapon to dominate. Yet, Wisdom reminds us that leadership is not self-importance but stewardship. Every decision, every exercise of authority—whether in politics, church, home, or workplace—will one day be examined by the One who entrusted it.
True leadership, therefore, begins with humility. A humble leader listens, learns, and serves. Authority must never silence truth or crush the weak. Rather, it should mirror God’s justice—firm yet compassionate, strong yet merciful. Every one of us shares in this call, for each has some area of influence—family, ministry, or community—where we are invited to lead with love and fairness.
St. Josaphat, whom we honor today, lived this call courageously. As Archbishop of Polotsk, he labored for unity between East and West, striving for reconciliation amid fierce division. Misunderstood and opposed, he remained faithful to the voice of the Spirit, choosing peace over revenge, service over pride. His martyrdom became a witness that authentic leadership seeks unity, not domination.
May St. Josaphat’s example inspire us—and especially those who hold authority—to lead with humility, guided not by ego but by God’s truth. May we remember always that every position of power is a trust, and every trust a call to love.
“Lord, help our leaders and help us all to serve with justice, humility, and faithfulness to You.”
