Scripture Verse

Saturday of the Twenty-Seventh Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: Galatians 3:22–29; Psalm 105; Luke 11:27–28
In today's Gospel, a woman in the crowd is so impressed by Jesus that she exclaims, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” Jesus responds, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Jesus is not diminishing the unique blessing of His mother, Mary. Rather, He reveals the deeper reason for Mary's blessedness. Mary is blessed not only because she carried Jesus in her womb, but also because she heard God's Word, believed it, and surrendered her life to its fulfillment. At the Annunciation, she declared, “May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). She is the perfect example of someone who hears God's Word and lives by it. My dear friends, sometimes we admire the saints, celebrate religious ceremonies, carry our Bibles, and listen attentively to homilies, yet struggle to put God's Word into practice. We hear Jesus teach us to forgive, but we hold on to resentment. We hear Him call us to love our neighbors, but we ignore those in need. We hear Him tell us not to be afraid yet allow fear to control our decisions. The blessing of God's Word becomes fruitful in us when we move from hearing to believing, and from believing to acting. In the first reading, Saint Paul reminds us that through faith in Jesus Christ, we have become children of God. Through Baptism, we have clothed ourselves with Christ, and our differences in background, status, and identity must never become obstacles to Christian unity. If we truly believe God's Word, our lives should reflect the love, mercy, forgiveness, and compassion of Christ. Faith is not merely something we profess with our lips; it is a relationship with God that changes how we treat one another. As members of the Church, we are called to be living witnesses to God's Word. In our families, workplaces, communities, and encounters with the vulnerable, may people recognize the Gospel through our actions. May Mary, our Mother and model of faith, teach us to receive God's Word with humility and obey it with love. For truly blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it!
