Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels
Readings: Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5/Psalm 139/Matthew 18:1-5, 10
Job hears God speak from the storm and is reminded that the world is full of mysteries beyond human understanding. He cannot command the dawn, measure the depths of the sea, or know every path through darkness. His humility does not mean that God has abandoned him. Rather, it opens him to encounter the Lord whose wisdom and care are greater than his own. Psalm 139 brings that truth close to the heart: “O LORD, you have probed me and you know me.” God knows our thoughts, our journeys, and our resting places. There is nowhere we can go beyond his presence. Even when we feel uncertain or alone, God’s hand can guide and hold us fast. Jesus reveals this care in a striking way. When his disciples ask who is greatest, he places a child among them. In the Kingdom of Heaven, greatness is not measured by status or power, but by humility, trust, and the willingness to welcome those who have little influence. Jesus warns his disciples not to despise “one of these little ones,” reminding them that their angels always look upon the face of the Father. Every person matters to God. The guardian angels are a sign of this attentive love. They serve God and watch over us, pointing us toward the One who made us and knows us by name. Their presence does not promise that we will never suffer or make mistakes. It assures us that God does not leave us to walk alone. We can ask our guardian angel to help us resist what draws us away from God, choose what is good, and remain faithful in daily life. This feast also asks us to reflect God’s care in our treatment of others. We honor the guardian angels when we protect the vulnerable, listen patiently, encourage someone who feels forgotten, and welcome each person with respect. May we trust that God guides us along the everlasting way, and become companions of care and hope for one another.
