Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
Palm Sunday invites us into a profound mystery: the same crowd that welcomes Jesus with palm branches will soon cry out for His crucifixion. In the Igbo cultural context, palm leaves are rich in meaning, they symbolize peace, sacredness honor, victory, and communal belonging. They are used to welcome dignitaries and to celebrate important moments. In a similar way, the people in Jerusalem used palms to honor Jesus, recognizing Him as the one who comes in the name of the Lord. The liturgy quickly shifts from these joyful praises to the solemn reading of the Passion. This movement reveals a deeper truth: human praise can be shallow and unstable, but Christ’s mission is firm and unwavering. While the crowd’s understanding of kingship was rooted in power and political liberation, Jesus reveals a different kind of kingship, one grounded in humility, suffering, and obedience to the Father. The palm, then, becomes a challenging symbol. In Igbo tradition, it signifies victory, but in Christ, victory is redefined. It is not about dominance, but about surrender; not about being served, but about serving others even unto death. As Saint Paul reminds us, Jesus “humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” This is the path to true exaltation. For us today, carrying palms is not just a ritual act; it is a commitment. It asks us to examine the authenticity of our faith. Are we only present in moments of celebration, or are we willing to follow Christ through suffering, sacrifice, and daily challenges? Do we honor Him with our lips alone, or with lives that reflect His humility and love? As we begin Holy Week, the palms in our hands call us to a deeper discipleship. They remind us that to truly welcome Christ as King is to walk with Him all the way to the Cross, trusting that beyond it lies the true and lasting victory of resurrection
