Easter Vigil
Tonight, the Church bursts into light after the silence of the tomb. From the first words of creation, “Let there be light” to the empty tomb proclaimed in the Gospel of Gospel of Matthew, we witness a single, powerful truth: God has always held His people in His hands, and in the Resurrection of Jesus, that truth is fulfilled forever. The Easter Vigil is a journey through salvation history. In creation, God brings order out of chaos and calls everything “very good.” In the crossing of the Red Sea, He leads His people from slavery to freedom. Through the prophets, He promises restoration, a new heart, and a new spirit. Again and again, even when humanity falters, God remains faithful. His hands never let go. But tonight, something new and definitive has happened. In raising Jesus from the dead, God has acted once and for all. The Resurrection is not just a miracle, it is the victory of life over death, light over darkness, hope over despair. By this single action, God gathers every one of us into His saving embrace. No sin is too great, no darkness too deep, no life too broken to be redeemed. Saint Paul reminds us that through baptism, we are united with Christ in His death and resurrection. This means that the Resurrection is not only about Jesus, it is about us. We are no longer defined by sin or fear, but by new life in Christ. We belong to God. We are held securely in His hands. The women at the tomb come in sorrow but leave “fearful yet overjoyed.” Their encounter with the risen Christ transforms everything. The stone is rolled away, not just from the tomb, but from every heart weighed down by doubt and despair. Jesus meets them, and He meets us, with a simple but powerful message: “Do not be afraid.” “Let this holy building shake with joy!” Tonight, that joy is not just an emotion but a proclamation. It is the joy of knowing that God has not abandoned us, that His love is stronger than death, and that our lives are safe in His hands. No matter where we have been, no matter what we carry, the Resurrection declares that we are not lost. We are found. We are loved. We are held. As we celebrate this holy night, let us rejoice with all creation. Let our hearts be filled with light. For Christ is risen, and in Him, God has claimed each one of us forever.
