The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus draws us into the very center of our faith: not a doctrine alone, but a living, faithful, and tender love. The Scriptures today unfold this mystery as a love that chooses, redeems, abides, and restores.
In Deuteronomy, Moses reminds Israel that their identity is not rooted in strength or greatness, but in being chosen and loved by God. “It was because the Lord loved you.” This is the foundation of covenant: not human merit, but divine fidelity. God sets His heart on His people, not because they are worthy, but because He is love.
Saint John takes us even deeper: “God is love.” Not merely loving but Love itself. And this love is revealed in the sending of the Son. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the visible, tangible expression of the invisible love of the Father. On the Cross, that Heart is opened, not in defeat, but in total self-gift. It is a love that gives everything and holds nothing back.
The Gospel invites us to encounter this love personally. Jesus does not simply declare love; He extends an invitation: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.” The Sacred Heart is approachable, gentle, and humble. It is a refuge for the weary, a resting place for the burdened, a home for the restless soul.
To “remain in love,” as John says, is to dwell in this Heart, to trust in His mercy, to receive His love, and to allow that love to shape how we live. The proof that we remain in Him is simple but demanding, we love one another. The love we receive must become the love we give.
Today, the Sacred Heart calls us to three movements:
to remember that we are chosen and loved,
to rest in His mercy and compassion,
and to reflect that love in concrete acts of charity.
For in the end, holiness is not measured by how much we achieve, but by how deeply we love, and how faithfully we remain in the Heart that first loved us.
