Stay Awake!

Christian life is not a life of spiritual sleep or indifference. It is a life of attentiveness, being aware of God’s presence, faithful to our responsibilities, and ready to welcome the Lord whenever He comes. Paul reminds the Corinthians that God has already enriched them with every spiritual gift. They were not lacking in what they needed to live as faithful disciples. Yet, despite their gifts, they struggled with division, pride, and quarrels. This reminds us that receiving God’s gifts is not enough; we must remain awake and use those gifts faithfully. We can become spiritually asleep when we allow pride, anger, distractions, or selfishness to take control of our lives. Jesus therefore calls us to be like the faithful and prudent servant who continues doing what is right even when the master seems delayed. Staying awake means continuing to pray when we do not see immediate answers, continuing to love when love is difficult, continuing to forgive when we have been hurt, and continuing to serve even when nobody notices. The life of Saint Monica gives us a beautiful example of this faithful vigilance. Monica remained persistent in prayer and never stopped trusting in God. She patiently prayed for her family and entrusted those she loved to God's mercy. Her perseverance reminds us that prayer is not wasted time. Sometimes God works quietly and gradually, preparing hearts and changing lives in ways we cannot immediately see. Saint Monica teaches us that staying awake means never giving up on God and never giving up on the power of prayer. Her tears became prayers, her patience became a testimony of faith, and her perseverance bore fruit in the life of her son, Saint Augustine. Let us not wait for a perfect moment to become faithful. The Lord comes to us in the ordinary moments of every day. Stay awake. Pray. Serve. Love. Forgive. Persevere. And like Saint Monica, trust that God is faithful and that our prayers offered with faith will never be forgotten.
