Scripture Verse
Readings: 2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12/ Psalm 123/Mark 12:18-27Memorial of Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
Saint Paul writes to Timothy with urgency and tenderness: “Stir into flame the gift of God that you have.” This is a call to action. The gift of God within us is not meant to remain dormant, hidden, or lukewarm. It must be awakened, nurtured, and allowed to burn brightly.
Paul names clearly what this gift looks like: not a spirit of cowardice, but of power, love, and self-control. Fear shrinks us; grace expands us. Fear silences witness; grace emboldens it. This is why Paul insists: “Do not be ashamed of your testimony.” Faith that is alive cannot remain private, it radiates.
This call finds a powerful embodiment in the lives of Saint Charles Lwanga and his companions. These young martyrs of Uganda did exactly what Paul urged: they stirred into flame the gift they had received. In the face of persecution, pressure, and even death, they did not shrink back. Their faith was not convenient, it was courageous. They chose Christ over fear, truth over compromise, and eternal life over temporary safety.
Their witness connects beautifully with the Gospel. The Sadducees, who deny the resurrection, approach Jesus with a question rooted in earthly logic. But Jesus lifts their understanding: God is not confined to human categories. “He is not God of the dead but of the living.” Faith in the resurrection changes everything. It gives meaning to suffering, courage in trials, and hope beyond death.
This is exactly what sustained the martyrs. They believed not just in a doctrine, but in a living God, a God who holds their lives beyond death. That conviction turned fear into boldness.
For us today, the message is clear:
The gift of God is already within you, through your baptism, your calling, your ministry. But gifts can grow cold if neglected. Faith can weaken if not practiced. Love can fade if not expressed.
Like the martyrs, we may not all be called to die for the faith, but we are all called to live for it boldly.
