Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child JesusReadings: Job 19:21-27/Psalm 27/Luke 10:1-12
“The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few.” Jesus speaks these words not to discourage us, but to invite us into his mission. The harvest is the people God loves and longs to gather; the laborers are those willing to carry his peace, care for the suffering, and announce that his Kingdom is near.
Jesus sends the disciples two by two. They go with little, depending on God and receiving the welcome of others. Their first words are not a demand, but a blessing: “Peace to this household.” Their mission is to make God’s nearness tangible through peace, healing, and humble service.
Saint Thérèse shows us that this mission is not reserved for people with public influence or extraordinary opportunities. She desired to serve the Church and discovered her vocation in love: doing ordinary things with great love, praying for others, and offering even small acts to God. Her “little way” is not a small love, but a trust in God’s mercy that makes everyday faithfulness fruitful. In the Church, hidden prayer and quiet kindness can help carry the Gospel far beyond what we see.
Job’s cry gives this mission depth. In suffering, he longs for his Vindicator, confident that he will see God. The psalmist also waits with courage: “I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.” Christian hope does not deny pain or promise an easy road. It trusts that God remains near and that love is never wasted. This is the hope we carry into homes, hospitals, workplaces, and friendships.
So, we can ask the Master of the harvest to send laborers, and offer ourselves, too. We may begin with a word of peace, a patient presence, a prayer for someone in need, or a small duty done with love. Through Saint Thérèse’s intercession, may God make our humble service a harvest of grace.
