The Humble Queen

On this Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Church places before us a profound mystery: true greatness is found in humility and service. Jesus teaches, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Mary is the perfect example of this truth. She became Queen not by seeking power, recognition, or honor, but by surrendering herself completely to God’s will. In the Gospel, Jesus warns against seeking places of honor and titles while failing to serve others. Mary chose the opposite path. Her greatness came from her “yes” to God, her openness to His grace, and her willingness to become the servant of the Lord. She allowed God to dwell within her, and therefore her life became a dwelling place of divine glory. This connects beautifully with Ezekiel’s vision: “The glory of the Lord will dwell in our land.” Mary teaches us that humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves; it means recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God and using those gifts for His glory and the service of others. As Queen of Heaven, she remains a mother close to her children, leading us always toward Christ, our one Teacher and Master. Today, let us ask Mary to teach us her humble heart. May we not seek to be noticed, praised, or placed above others, but may we desire to serve faithfully. When we humble ourselves before God, He can accomplish great things through us.
