"The Laborer Deserves His Keep."

Today's Gospel reminds us that every disciple is a missionary entrusted with the work of proclaiming the Kingdom of God. Jesus sends out His apostles with a clear mission: preach the Good News, heal the sick, restore the broken, and bring peace wherever they go. They are to give freely because they have freely received God's grace. Yet, during this call to generous service, Jesus also affirms an important truth: "The laborer deserves his keep." This is not merely about material support but about God's recognition of the dignity and value of those who dedicate their lives to His service. The Lord never overlooks the sacrifices of those who labor faithfully in His vineyard. Their greatest reward is not earthly comfort or human applause but the eternal inheritance of the Kingdom of God. The First Reading reveals the tender heart of God, who loves His people with the compassion of a father teaching a child to walk. Even when Israel wandered away, God's mercy prevailed over His anger. This same loving God accompanies every minister, priests, religious, missionaries, catechists, parish volunteers, parents, teachers, choir members, youth leaders, and all who serve the Gospel. Ministry is often marked by hidden sacrifices, disappointments, misunderstandings, and rejection. But God sees every act of love, every silent prayer, every generous service, and every burden carried for His name. He strengthens His laborers with His compassion and promises that no sacrifice made for His Kingdom will ever be in vain. Today we also honor Saint Augustine Zhao Rong, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs, whose lives testify to the highest reward awaiting faithful servants of Christ. Once a soldier escorting a bishop to prison, Augustine Zhao Rong encountered Christ through the witness of courageous believers. He embraced the Catholic faith, became a priest, and ultimately gave his life for the Gospel alongside many companions during periods of persecution in China. They understood that the true reward of Christian ministry is not security or success but eternal communion with Christ. Their martyrdom reminds every minister that faithfulness is measured not by popularity or recognition but by perseverance, courage, and love until the end. The Church continues Christ's mission today because countless laborers continue to answer His call. Some preach from the pulpit; others evangelize through acts of charity, music, teaching, hospitality, administration, or quiet service behind the scenes. Every ministry has value in God's eyes when offered with humility and love. Jesus assures us that while the world may not always appreciate His servants, the Father never forgets them. Every faithful laborer has a place prepared in the Kingdom where every tear will be wiped away and every sacrifice will receive its eternal reward. Therefore, let us continue serving joyfully, trusting that the One who called us is faithful and that our labor in the Lord is never in vain.
