The Lord keeps his covenant forever.

“The Lord keeps his covenant forever.” This theme beautifully captures the heart of today’s readings and the witness of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr. In the first reading, God reminds Jerusalem that her dignity did not come from her own strength or beauty. She was helpless and abandoned, yet God saw her, lifted her up, cleansed her, clothed her, and entered into a covenant with her. Even after she turned away and betrayed that covenant, God declared: “I will remember the covenant I made with you.” Human beings may forget, fail, wander, and become unfaithful, but God remains faithful. The Gospel speaks of covenant in another profound way. Jesus reminds us that marriage is not simply a human arrangement but a sacred covenant established by God. His teaching challenges us to move beyond a culture of convenience and disposable relationships. True love requires fidelity, sacrifice, patience, forgiveness, and perseverance. Jesus also reminds us that some are called to renounce marriage “for the sake of the Kingdom of heaven.” This was the path chosen by Saint Maximilian Kolbe. Saint Maximilian gave himself completely to God and to the service of others. His life demonstrated that covenant is not merely a promise spoken with the lips; it is a commitment lived through sacrifice. His love for Christ enabled him to remain faithful even in the most terrible circumstances. He teaches us that authentic Christian love does not ask only, “What will I receive?” but, “How can I give myself for God and for others?” Today, God invites us to trust His covenant even when we have failed. Our sins do not cancel God's faithfulness. His mercy calls us back, restores our dignity, and gives us the grace to begin again. Like Saint Maximilian Kolbe, may we become people whose lives say: “Lord, I belong to you.” When we remain faithful to God, our lives become witnesses that His covenant truly endures forever.
