The Love of Christ Makes Us a New Creation

Today's readings invite us into the transforming power of the love of Christ. Saint Paul declares, "The love of Christ impels us" (2 Corinthians 5:14). The Christian life does not begin with fear, obligation, or mere religious practice; it begins with an encounter with the crucified and risen Christ whose love changes everything. Because Christ died for all, those who belong to Him are called to live no longer for themselves but for Him. This is the heart of Christian discipleship. Saint Mary Magdalene is a living witness to this truth. Once burdened by her past, she encountered the mercy of Jesus, and His love completely transformed her life. She became a "new creation." The old had passed away; her identity was no longer defined by her wounds or failures but by her relationship with Christ. This transformation did not remove all suffering. On Easter morning, she still stood outside the tomb weeping. Yet her tears became the place where the Risen Lord revealed Himself. The Gospel teaches us that sorrow can sometimes cloud our spiritual vision. Mary looked directly at Jesus but failed to recognize Him because her heart was overwhelmed by grief. It was only when Jesus called her by name—"Mary!"—that her eyes were opened. The Good Shepherd knows each of His sheep by name (John 10:3). God's call is always personal. Before He entrusts us with a mission, He first invites us into a personal encounter with His love. Jesus then gives Mary Magdalene a mission: "Go to my brothers and tell them." She becomes the first witness of the Resurrection and is rightly called the "Apostle to the Apostles." She did not keep her encounter with Christ to herself. She proclaimed with joy, "I have seen the Lord." Every authentic encounter with the Risen Christ leads to evangelization. Those who have experienced His mercy cannot remain silent. May we allow the love of Christ to make us new, to heal our wounds, strengthen our faith, and send us forth as joyful witnesses of His Resurrection.
