Scripture Verse

Tuesday of the Twenty-Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Readings: Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13/Psalm 119/Luke 8:19-21
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus told the Parable of the Sower. He spoke about the seed that fell on different kinds of soil, reminding us that the Word of God bears fruit only when it is received with an open and willing heart. Today, Luke immediately gives us a living example of what that good soil looks like. Jesus is told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to see you.” Jesus responds: “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” This statement creates a strong contrast between those who merely belong to Jesus outwardly and those who truly belong to Him by doing the will of God. Jesus is not rejecting His mother or diminishing the importance of His family. Rather, Luke shows us that true relationship with Jesus is ultimately measured by our response to God's Word. And who better personifies this than Mary? At the Annunciation, Mary heard God's Word, believed it, accepted it, and acted upon it: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” She became the living soil in which God's Word took root and bore the greatest fruit, the Word made flesh. Thus, Luke's placement of this Gospel immediately after the Parable of the Sower is significant. Mary is not simply someone who heard the Word; she is the personification of the good soil Jesus had just described. Her entire life became a response to God's Word. She listened at the Annunciation, followed Jesus throughout His ministry, stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, and remained with the disciples in prayer after His Resurrection. The first reading gives us the practical test of such discipleship: “To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.” Hearing the Word must lead to action. Our faith cannot remain only in our ears or on our lips. It must become visible in our love, forgiveness, humility, generosity, justice, and concern for the poor. Therefore, the true family of Jesus consists of those who allow His Word to transform their lives and who faithfully do the Father's will. May Mary teach us to receive God's Word with humility, to trust it with faith, and to live it with courage.
