Seventh Sunday of Easter
In today’s Gospel, Jesus lifts His eyes to the Father and prays: “I pray for them.” This moment reveals Him as more than a teacher, it shows Him as our High Priest, interceding for us. This is where Hebrews 5 helps us understand more deeply. It tells us that every high priest is chosen to act on behalf of others before God, offering prayers and sacrifices. Christ fulfills this perfectly, not with animal sacrifice, but with His own life, obedience, and love. Hebrews says that Jesus “learned obedience through what he suffered” and became the source of eternal salvation. This connects beautifully with the Gospel: as Jesus prepares to return to the Father at the Ascension, He does not abandon His disciples. Instead, He carries them into His prayer. His priesthood continues, not in the Temple, but in heaven, where He intercedes for us before the Father. And what does He pray for? Eternal life. But as Jesus defines it, eternal life is not just life after death, it is “to know the Father and the one He sent.” This means that eternal life begins now, in relationship with Christ, and is fulfilled after the Ascension, where He opens the way for us to share in the life of God. So, the Ascension is not Jesus’ absence, it is His glorified presence. He goes to the Father as our High Priest, bringing our humanity with Him, and continues to pray for us. Like the apostles in the upper room, we are invited to live in prayer, trust, and unity, knowing that Christ is constantly interceding for us.
