The Word of God today invites us to examine not just what we possess, but what possesses us. Jesus speaks with clarity: “Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” This is not merely a statement about material wealth; it is a revelation about the direction of our lives. In the Gospel, Christ contrasts two kinds of treasure: earthly and heavenly. Earthly treasures, wealth, status, power, recognition, are fragile. They can be lost, stolen, or destroyed. They also often consume our attention and energy. Heavenly treasures, on the other hand, faith, love, mercy, justice, fidelity to God, are enduring and secure. They shape the soul and orient us toward eternity. This teaching finds a powerful illustration in the First Reading. In a time of violence and corruption, when Athaliah sought to destroy the royal line, a hidden treasure remained: the child Joash, preserved in the temple. While evil seemed to dominate, God was quietly safeguarding His promise. What was truly valuable was not the throne seized by force, but the covenant preserved in faithfulness. In time, what was hidden was revealed, and rightful order was restored. This reminds us that God’s treasures often grow in the hidden, quiet acts of faith, unseen sacrifices, silent fidelity. The world may not notice them, but God does. And in the end, they bear lasting fruit. Jesus also speaks about the “eye” as the lamp of the body. The “eye” represents our inner vision, our focus, our intention. If our vision is clear and fixed on God, our whole life is filled with light. But if our vision is clouded by greed, envy, or selfish ambition, darkness spreads within us. What we choose to value shapes how we see, and how we live.
