Memorial of The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary invites us into the interior life of Mary, a heart that listens, trusts, and treasures the mysterious ways of God. The Gospel tells us that “his mother kept all these things in her heart.” This is not a passive remembering, but an active, prayerful pondering. Mary does not always understand everything that happens, yet she holds onto God’s word with faith. In the Gospel (Luke 2:41–51), Mary experiences the anxiety of losing Jesus and the confusion of finding Him in the temple speaking about His Father’s house. Even in her distress, she does not reject what she does not understand. Instead, she carries it in her heart. Her heart becomes a sacred space where God’s will unfolds gradually. This posture of the heart connects beautifully with the first reading. Elisha, when called by Elijah, responds with total surrender. He leaves behind everything, his oxen, his livelihood, his past, to follow the call of God. Like Mary, he trusts without needing full clarity. His response is immediate and complete. The Psalm speaks about this trust: “You are my inheritance, O Lord.” Both Mary and Elisha show us that when God becomes our portion, everything else finds its proper place. Mary’s Immaculate Heart is a heart fully given to God, open, attentive, and faithful even in uncertainty. In our own lives, we often want quick answers and clear understanding. But the example of Mary teaches us a different way, the way of quiet trust. To “keep things in the heart” means to allow God to work within us over time, to reflect, to pray, and to trust even when the path is unclear. Today, we are invited to imitate Mary’s heart: a heart that listens deeply, trusts completely, and remains faithful patiently. Like her, may we learn to carry both our joys and our struggles before God, confident that He is always at work within us.
