Readings: Genesis 3:9-15, 20/Psalm 89/John 19:25-34
Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church
The readings today invite us to see Mary not only as the Mother of Jesus, but as our mother and a gentle teacher in the journey of faith. In Genesis, after the fall, we witness humanity’s first experience of fear, shame, and separation from God. Yet even in that broken moment, God plants a promise: the offspring of the woman will crush the serpent’s head. This “woman” points forward to Mary, the new Eve, whose obedience unties the knot of disobedience created in Eden. Where Eve listened to the serpent, Mary listens to God. Where Eve brings division, Mary becomes the mother of unity and life. At the foot of the Cross in John’s Gospel, Jesus entrusts Mary to the beloved disciple and the disciple to Mary: “Behold, your mother.” In that moment, Mary’s motherhood expands beyond Jesus to include the whole Church. She becomes our mother not in sentiment, but in mission, called to nurture, guide, and accompany all who follow Christ. As a mother, Mary teaches us closeness: she stands by us in suffering, just as she stood by Jesus at the Cross. She does not run from pain but remains present in it. As a teacher, Mary instructs us without many words. Her life speaks: At Nazareth, she teaches trust: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” At Cana, she teaches obedience: “Do whatever He tells you.” At Calvary, she teaches faithfulness: to remain even when everything seems lost. The blood and water flowing from Christ’s side symbolize the birth of the Church. And there, at its very beginning, stands Mary, Mother of the Church, quietly forming her children to live in grace, unity, and love. To accept Mary as our mother is to accept her guidance: she leads us not to herself, but always to her Son. She forms us in humility, teaches us how to listen to God, and shows us how to remain faithful in both joy and suffering.
