Readings: Acts 18:9-18/Psalm 47/John 16:20-23
Friday of the Sixth Week of Easter
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks with striking honesty: “You will weep and mourn… you will grieve.” He does not deny the reality of suffering. Instead, He transforms its meaning. The sorrows of the disciples, like the pain of a woman in labor, is not the end of the story. It is a passage toward a deeper, unshakable joy. This joy is not the same as temporary happiness. Happiness depends on circumstances; joy flows from relationship. Jesus promises a joy rooted in His presence, a joy that comes from knowing that He has conquered suffering and death. That is why He can say with confidence: “No one will take your joy away from you.” In the first reading, we see this promise lived out. Paul faces opposition, accusations, and threats. But he continues boldly because the Lord reassures him: “Do not be afraid… I am with you.” His mission is sustained not by comfort, but by the deep joy of knowing he is not alone. This speaks directly to our lives. We all carry burdens, unexpected bills, personal struggles, uncertainty about the future. These can weigh heavily on the heart. But Christ invites us to anchor our lives not in what comes and goes, but in Him who remains. When our joy is rooted in Christ, it becomes resilient. It does not disappear in hardship; rather, it quietly grows through it. True Christian joy is born in trust: trust that God is present, that He is working even in difficulty, and that no suffering has the final word.
