Today’s readings invite us to examine not simply how we appear before others, but who we truly are before God. Jesus gives one of His strongest warnings to the scribes and Pharisees: “You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones.” The problem was not that they practiced religion; the problem was that their outward religious appearance had become disconnected from the condition of their hearts. This is a challenge for all of us. It is possible to look holy, speak religiously, attend church, pray publicly, and yet fail to allow God to transform our hearts. Christianity is not merely about appearance; it is about conversion. God desires a heart that is sincere, humble, compassionate, and faithful. The first reading gives us another important dimension of authentic faith. Saint Paul reminds the Christians that faith must be accompanied by responsibility and meaningful work. He says, “If anyone is unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.” Paul himself worked hard so that he would not become a burden to others. His example teaches us that Christian life is not passive. We are called to contribute, to serve, to use our gifts, and to take responsibility for the lives God has entrusted to us. There is a beautiful connection between the two readings. Jesus warns against looking good without being good, while Paul warns against expecting the fruits of life without accepting responsibility. Both challenge a superficial faith. Today, therefore, we can ask ourselves: Is my Christian life only something people see, or is it something God sees within me? Do I practice faith when nobody is watching? Do my prayers produce love? Does my participation in the Church make me more compassionate, responsible, honest, and generous? Let us not spend our lives decorating the outside while neglecting the inside. Let Christ cleanse our hearts and make our lives fruitful. May our faith not merely have a beautiful appearance, but may it produce beautiful fruits of love, service, justice, humility, and peace. May the Lord of peace, as Saint Paul says, “give you peace at all times and in every way.” Amen.
