Our Mission : Food, Education, Medicine
At the heart of today’s readings is a simple but demanding truth: love is not optional; it is the very command of Christ and the mark of His disciples. In the Gospel, Jesus does not suggest love; He commands it: “Love one another as I love you.” This raises the standard beyond human preference or convenience. The measure of our love is no longer ourselves, but Christ, who loves selflessly, sacrificially, and completely.
Jesus deepens this command by calling us friends, not servants. Friendship with Christ is rooted in intimacy, trust, and shared life. He reveals the Father to us and invites us into that same relationship. But this friendship is not passive, it demands a response: obedience expressed through love. To remain His friend is to live His command.
In the first reading, we see how this love takes shape in the early Church. Faced with confusion and division, the Apostles respond not with control or harshness, but with discernment guided by the Holy Spirit. Their decision, “It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us…” reflects a love that seeks unity, not burden; peace, not division. They choose what builds up the community rather than what weighs it down. Love here becomes practical: it listens, it discerns, it acts for the good of others.
This challenges us today. Often, we can reduce love to feelings or words, but Christian love is concrete. It sacrifices, forgives, listens, and seeks the good of others even when it is difficult. It calls us to lay down our pride, our need to be right, and sometimes even our comfort, for the sake of another.
Jesus also reminds us that we are chosen and sent to bear fruit that will last. The fruit He speaks of is love, lived daily in small and great ways. When we love as He loves, our lives become a testimony that endures beyond us.
So, the question is not whether we know about love, but whether we live it. Do our actions bring peace like the Apostles? Do we love sacrificially like Christ? Do people encounter God’s mercy through us?
Love is the greatest gift we have received and the greatest mission we are given.
