Our Mission : Food, Education, Medicine
Today’s readings speak of our total dependence on God. Jesus speaks clearly in the Gospel: “I am the vine, you are the branches… without me you can do nothing.” These are not just words of advice, they are a truth about who we are. Apart from Christ, we may be busy, active, and even successful in the eyes of the world, but we will bear no lasting fruit.
In the first reading, we see a serious conflict in the early Church. Some insisted that the Gentile converts must follow the Mosaic law to be saved. There was confusion, disagreement, and tension. Yet notice what the Church does: they do not rely on personal opinions or human authority alone. They gather, they listen, they discern together. Implicitly, they seek to remain connected to Christ, the true vine. They recognize, even in their struggle, that the mission of the Church is not a human project, it is God’s work.
This connects deeply with the Gospel. The temptation we all face is to act as though we can manage life, ministry, relationships, and even our spiritual growth by our own strength. We plan, we organize, we strive, but sometimes we forget to remain in Christ. And when we disconnect from Him, we become like branches cut off from the vine: we may look alive for a while, but slowly we dry up.
Jesus gives us a different path: “Remain in me.” To remain in Him means to stay rooted in prayer, to listen to His word, to trust His grace, and to depend on Him daily. It is not about doing more, but about being connected more deeply.
And then comes something surprising, the Father prunes the branches that are already bearing fruit. This means that even when we are doing well, God still allows challenges, purification, and moments of stretching. Why? Not to harm us, but to help us bear more fruit. The pruning may feel painful, misunderstandings, setbacks, sacrifices, but it is a sign that God is at work in us.
Dear friends, the message today is simple but demanding, we cannot live this life alone. We cannot fulfill our calling by our own strength. We need Christ, every day, in everything.
Let us return to Him today. Let us remain in Him. For when we are united with Christ, our lives will not be empty or fruitless. Instead, we will bear fruit that glorifies the Father and reveals that we are truly His disciples.
