Memorial of Saint John Paul II, Pope
Readings: Ephesians 3:14–21/ Psalm 33/ Luke 12:49–53
Today, as we celebrate the Memorial of Saint John Paul II, Pope, we reflect on this important theme: The Holy Spirit is the principal agent of the Church’s mission.
In his encyclical Redemptoris Missio (1990), Saint John Paul II reminds us that the mission of Christ the Redeemer is far from complete. The Church is called to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to bring Christ’s love into every dimension of human life.
I have a special personal connection with Saint John Paul II because he died on my birthday, April 2, 2005. His missionary vision continues to inspire me and challenges each of us to become witnesses of Christ in the world.
In the first reading, Saint Paul prays that we may “be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self” (Ephesians 3:16). This reminds us that mission begins with inner transformation. Before we can effectively bring Christ to others, we must allow the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts and teach us to love as Christ loves.
The Holy Spirit empowers us to become authentic witnesses of the Gospel.
In today's Gospel, Jesus declares: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Luke 12:49). This fire represents the transforming power of God's presence, which awakens faith, purifies hearts, and inspires courageous Christian witness.
Jesus also speaks of division. He is not encouraging hatred within families; rather, he acknowledges that following the Gospel can create tensions when its truth challenges our choices, prejudices, and comfortable ways of living. Christian discipleship requires courage and fidelity, even when doing what is right becomes difficult.
Saint John Paul II demonstrated this courage through his defense of human dignity, his promotion of peace, and his call to build a civilization of love. His life teaches us that missionary discipleship requires both prayer and action.
As he emphasizes in Redemptoris Missio, the Holy Spirit is the principal agent of mission. The Father sends the Son, the Father and the Son send the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit empowers the Church to continue Christ's saving mission. We are not the owners of this mission; we are its humble collaborators.
This mission extends beyond geographical boundaries. It reaches our families, schools, hospitals, workplaces, and communities. It calls us to accompany young people who experience loneliness, emotional wounds, and despair, and to serve the poor, the sick, and the forgotten with compassion.
Let us remember Saint Paul's assurance that God “is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20).
May the Holy Spirit renew our hearts, strengthen our missionary commitment, and make us courageous witnesses of Christ's love. May we pray deeply, serve generously, forgive sincerely, and proclaim the Gospel faithfully.
